Napa Valley - Red Bluff

We leave San Francisco and the weather clears up. From Napa to Calistoga, we drive through the wine region, Napa Valley. We make a couple of stops at vineyards, the last one in Calistoga.



The wine country

An old railroad depot converted to house shops and a deli. An irresistible smell of grilled burgers attracted us.

Our hotel in Red Bluff is amazing and we enjoy seeing a clear blue sky after SF.

We have seen a lot of these heat haze effects on our trip. Hiroko managed to catch this one with the camera. Some times it looked like the road actually disappeared as the sky was mirrored on the road in the horizon. Technically, it is a mirage caused by the hot asphalt (or tarmac) heating the air over it so that light rays are bent such that a mirror image forms under the actually object. Ice cream at a diner on Route 66 Buying buffalo jerky at an Indian road side shop close to Grand Canyon. It was really good! In Arizona, P started to notice that the clouds had a red tinge. As most of the rocks and sand is red in Arizona, we thought it fitting that the clouds would also be pink-bellied. We speculated that it could be reflection of the ground or caused by red dust. Researching it a bit, I found that it may be caused by an optical effect called iridecence.

From Kanab to Bryce Canyon

Having crossed a time zone, when entering Utah, the clock had to be turned one hour forward, meaning that when the alarm clock woke us up at 6 am, it felt like 5. Well, it was worth it to get an early start. Again, it was a glorious morning: temperature 65 F (18 C) and a clear blue sky. The drive from Kanab to Bryce Canyon was very interesting. We saw rocks in all kinds of shapes and colors, vast high plains covered by shrub or miniature trees. But nestled in between the rocky mountains, in fertile belts, we also saw some attractive looking small farms and villages. Shortly before reaching Bryce Canyon, we stopped at a place called Red Canyon. We climbed a boulder in Red Canyon (M, P, and I). M is a little mountain goat. Munich - Las Vegas: Condor

We got up at 4.15 am to get to Munich airport super early. I had been unable to check-in online on Condor’s homepage. “You need to obtain a valid visa. Please consult the ESTA home page,” the error message had said. For all four of us. With significant unease, I had called the Condor hotline to inquire what to do. As far as I could see, the ESTAs we had obtained were valid and the data had been entered correctly. Oh, horror! What if we wouldn’t be allowed on the plane the next morning? (Quick mental calculation of the money wasted...) “Due to high demand, the expected waiting time is more than 15 minutes,” had the computer voice from Condor’s hotline informed. So I had waited, and waited and… after about 20 minutes a grumpy employee confirmed that there was indeed a problem with our ESTAs, but there was nothing she could do, she had no data access.
