Zion National Park

On our way from Parowan to Las Vegas, we realized that we had enough time to visit Zion. This was due to the fact that we woke up really early (M and I), and that our destination, Vegas, was one hour behind Utah time.

We drove up the canyon

Only when you compare to roads and vehicles, you realize the enormity of the canyon

At our first stop, we wandered off the beaten track and found a dried-out river bed. It ran trough a little canyon, which provided some climbing opportunity for us. It was in the shade and the ground was sandy - a natural "crash pad".

"Our" canyon

On our way back out of the canyon, we decided to make a stop at a popular trail head leading to an overlook of the canyon. There isn't much space along the road in Zion, and the park is popular, so it wasn't so easy, but we were lucky to find a little pocket for our car at the side of the road.

On the trail up to the overlook.

The hike was quite strenuous and we didn't know what to expect from the overlook, we wondered if it was worth the effort.

The view proved to be incredible. You could actually climb out to the edge of an overhang with a drop of many hundreds of meters.

Driving down again, we could identify the place we had stood and looked out over the canyon - over the giant "arch" on the left picture. On the magnification on the right, you can see a small speck, which is a person standing on that overhang exactly where we were.
